Orationer från svensk stormaktstid, exempelvis skrivna kring Gustav II Adolfs död, uppvisar en djup och stark kunskap om lovprisningens topiker - vad som bör hyllas och hur. Denna artikel vill visa hur tidigmoderna retoriska handböcker traderar de klassiska föreskrifterna om topikval inom genus demonstrativum, samt lyfta fram och problematisera lovprisningens roll under denna epok.

Abstract

Title “Praiseworthy virtues. Classical epideictic theory in early modern treatises"
Abstract Orations written during the 17th century in Sweden, for example at the death of Gustav II Adolf, exhibit a profound and extended knowledge of the topics of laudation. This article will show how the topics for genus demonstrativum and laudation in the classical treatises were transmitted through rhetorical ­treatises from early modern times. The function and importance of epideictics during this time will also be in focus.
